27" Screen
Intel Core i7 Processor
8 Gigabytes of Ram
2 Terabyte hard drive
AppleCare+MobileMe (Just cause)

Ordered on BlackFriday and finally arrived on the 10th of December. It’s a CTO / BTO model so I’m not surprised.

I was going to use it with my 30" Dell monitor but decided against it. I mean who honestly needs that much screen real estate?

As some of you may notice, Matt Holland is on the corner there. This was from a his visit to Durham back in November to see whether this would be his cup of tea.

Taken in the Techno Cafe, a ‘learning centre’ for Computer Scientists with vending machines, big screens, laptops and that sort of thing.

something a little different… I was a bit worried I’d be hungry, it wouldn’t be enough, etc. Either I had a light day or this was more than it looked like because I have left-overs!

What’s the first thing you check when you test out the Apple iPhone or the iPod touch ? Make sure it loads Flickr fine and it does. 🙂 This is not mine. I was checking it out at the San Francisco Apple Store. I was actually hoping to buy the iPod touch but they were sold out.

This is the first Apple iMac LCD model, from 2001, which I recently bought. It’s the 17" version, with a PowerPC G4 800MHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB disk, Superdrive.

The image was processed (from the 5D’s 12MP 12bit RAW file) and uploaded using this exact machine, it’s amazing how an eight year old machine holds up so well.

Strobist info:
580EXII at 105mm from the back, pointed at the rear of the LCD (which acted as a reflector to light the computer itself) with TTL;
430EX at 14mm with a Lumiquest softbox from the left at 1/8 to fill the LCD bezel a bit;
Both triggered by a ST-E2.

Haft Sîn (Persian: هفت سین) or the seven ‘S’s is a major tradition of Norouz, the traditional Iranian new year. The haft sin table includes seven items specificly starting with the letter S or Sîn (س in the Persian alphabet). The items symbolically correspond to seven creations and holy immortals protecting them. Originally called Haft Chin (هفت چین), the Haft Sin has evolved over time, but has kept its symbolism. Traditionally, families attempt to set as beautiful a Haft Sîn table as they can, as it is not only of traditional and spiritual value, but also noticed by visitors during Norouzi visitations and is a reflection of their good taste.

The Haft Sin items are:

1. sabzehwheat, barley or lentil sprouts growing in a dish – symbolizing rebirth
2. samanu – a sweet pudding made from wheat germ – symbolizing affluence
3. senjed – the dried fruit of the oleaster tree – symbolizing love
4. sîrgarlic – symbolizing medicine
5. sîbapples – symbolizing beauty and health
6. somaqsumac berries – symbolizing (the color of) sunrise
7. serkehvinegar – symbolizing age and patience

While traditionally incorrect, sometimes a missing Sin is exchanged with another item starting with an S. For example:

. sonbol – the fragrant hyacinth flower (the coming of spring)
. sekkehcoins (prosperity and wealth)

Other items on the table may include:

traditional Iranian pastries such as baghlava, toot, naan-nokhodchi
dried nuts, berries and raisins (Aajeel)
lit candles (enlightenment and happiness)
a mirror

decorated eggs, sometimes one for each member of the family (fertility)
a bowl with goldfish (life, and the sign of Pisces which the sun is leaving)
a bowl of water with an orange in it (the earth floating in space)
rose water for its magical cleansing powers

the national colours, for a patriotic touch
the Quran
the Shahnama or the Divan of Hafez

But we didn’t mistakenly exchange Serkeh with Sekkeh, we did it because I don’t like the smell of Serkeh (vinegar) 😉

By the way, I’ve put notes on all 7 Ss and other main parts of Haft Sin table.
