A Blue-winged Kookaburra in difficult light at the Kimberley’s Most Unlikely Icecream Kiosk. We’d just turned on to Gibb River Rd on our way up to Bell Gorge in the heat and dust, dreaming about drinks and icecreams when Lo! just before reaching the Lennard River crossing, there by the road in the dust was a sign saying Icecreams pointing to our left. This seemed unlikely but we went left anyway and there it was, a caravanserri of the first order – a caravanserri in a caravan in fact, right on the banks of the river. The fellow had been there for 5 years and supplied an incredible array of treats from cold drinks to pies. Not very exceptional anywhere else, but amazing out here. He had 8? freezers dotted around the place and did a roaring trade. As we were leaving a tour bus turned up to hurry us along and this is when I saw the Kooka.

It was in the tree over what passed for the parking area. I think Blue-wings mostly look demented and this one definitely did, though not helped by the lighting.
