September APW Meetup Update: 3 Shot Critique / Depth of Field Tutorial

Folks.

THe "new" Sanyo projector got good marks for color and brilliance rendition at the September meetup, and I should be getting a color calibrator from DataColor to review before the October meet.

This month we’ll be doing our "Three shot critique," If you’d like to work with a theme, try "The Color of Autumn." What colors does the fall evoke for you? Scarlet leaves? Orange pumpkins? Red apples at a farm stand? How about an amber glass of ale at an Octoberfest? Remember, it’s going to be cold soon and you’ll want to be shooting indoors…so get out and enjoy the cool weather.

You don’t have to shoot in the theme, though. Feel free to choose your own.

I’ll be talking a little bit about workflow before the critique, but the important thing to remember is to keep your original image files untouched. Always make copies of them before making changes. Consider them your "negatives" and protect them for the future. We’ll also talk about RAW v JPGs.

Let’s get those photos in by Sunday, October 25th, the end of the weekend before the meetup.

Alexandria Photography Workshop

We’re carrying over the theme from the ill-fated November meetup and doing casual portraiture, also called environmental portraiture for the theme.

What that means is that you don’t use special backgrounds, but place the subject amidst things that mean something to them, or just shoot a headshot. Writers at their desks, cooks in the kitchen, folks just relaxing in their favorite chair.

You don’t have to shoot in the theme, though. Feel free to choose your own.

We’ve decided to have a holiday meet up however instead of our usual format, we’re going to do the following:

3pm – Meet at St Kilda pier to shoot kite surfers or whatever inspires you

4pm – Meet at the Espy (The Esplanade) for drinks/beers.

Obviously you’re welcome to come to one or both of the events depending upon your schedule and inclination. It’ll be a very informal meet up so everyone can catch up on a social level before the holiday season is in full swing.

Due to the holidays, we’re consolidating the November and December B&Vs into one held in early December. There is a group in the room until 6, so we’re starting a few minutes later than usual.

Stay tuned…we’re hoping to have some sort of programming at the event. I’ll send an update via Meetup once things are decided on.

For those who haven’t been here before, we have a room to ourselves (upstairs, away from other customers who might be bothered by our flashes!) that comfortably holds our group, and has couches, tables, bar stools, and a pool table. We also have dedicated wait staff, and a wide menu of food and drinks to choose from. Parking is also pretty convenient in the area, and free after 6:00. Minors are welcome.
