We’ve done this fair many times by day… but some of the best photo ops turn up when the sun goes down and the lights of the midway come on. Join us this year at the start of the golden hour, and stay through sunset and beyond. A tripod or monopod are highly recommended!
Where can you find 500+lb pumpkins, pygmy goats, midway games, sheep shearing, a ferris wheel, dressage competition, and more fried dough than you can shake a corndog at?
www.topsfieldfair.org
A New England fall tradition and fun for the whole family (and anyone with a camera), Topsfield, the annual fair of the Essex Agricultural Society, is the oldest agricultural fair in the US. The Society’s goal is "to encourage, promote and preserve Essex County agricultural activities and to educate the general public regarding their importance."
So what’s up at the fair? A great variety of livestock, poultry, flowers and vegetables are on display; there are midway rides and games, fair food, color everywhere, and people people people. It’s a great place to shoot!
The fairgrounds are right on Route 1, approximately 25 miles north of Boston. PLAN ON HEAVY TRAFFIC ON ROUTE 1 approaching Topsfield (meaning, add 15-20 minutes to whatever time estimate Google maps gives you. We’ll meet up outside the MAIN entrance gate. I will send out my cell # closer to the date so you can call if you’re stuck in that line of cars and are going to be late.
We’ll do what we’ve done in past years — break off for periods of time but regroup every hour or so at specified points (maps/regrouping schedule will be distributed when we meet at the main gate!).
www.topsfieldfair.org/
Admission is $12 at the gate, and cash is recommended for food/games/ride tickets, etc, inside the fair. PARKING IS $8.
We will carpool for this so if you can give a ride or need a ride, post that info with your RSVP. Carpooling is self-coordinated but I can help match people up if needed — email me! (Bonnie B)

Yes, it looks messy, but I never said I was good at cable management – at least it works

Meet at the Quabbin Resevoir, in central Mass, to photograph the fall foliage. We will take a 3 mile hike at a leisurely pace for plenty of picture opportunities. Plan to stop along the trail for lunch and return in the afternoon. There will be excellent photo opportunities – the rainy summer should result in an above average foliage year.
Pack a lunch, and your camera gear!
I will arrange carpools, so if you don’t have transportation, RSVP with a note that you need a ride.

Flickrfan: Rain droplets on a leaf – Day 53 of Project 365
September 28, 2009

Every morning I walk past this spectacularly purple plant. The leaves are slightly velvety and the water droplets are really seem to catch the light, looking like little frozen droplets. It seemed ironic that my fridge had gone ice age on me this morning and that the rain droplets also looked frozen.
I deliberately shot this shot with dark blur on the left as I intend to use it at a windows desktop and I find too much detail under my icons distracting!
Lightroom: lots of recovery and level tweaking as the droplets were quite blown out (they still are a bit) crop to 1920X1200 to match my desktop, save to JPG
